You wake up to the sound of your alarm going off and think to yourself, ‘how is it already time to get up?!” You swear you literally just woke up. “Why must school start so early!?” You sigh. Does this sound like a typical morning for you? I can safely say that most of us experience the pain of a school morning. This is because school starts too early. Hi, I’m Elsie and today I’m here to persuade you as to why school should start later in the morning opposed to earlier.
First, students need to get their sleep. According to nationalwidechildrens.org children are only getting around or less than 7 hours of sleep when studies show students need exactly 9 and a half hours of sleep to get the recommended hours of snoozing. So, if we do the math here, most pupils get to school at around 8:20am and we all leave school at 2:50pm, resulting in us getting home between 3pm and 4pm if you were to go home straight after school. Meaning, we would need to be asleep by 8pm to get the suitable amount of hours to sleep.
We would also need 30mins before sleep of time in bed which would mean having to go to bed at 7:30pm which can sometimes be impossible with things needing to be done after school like after school clubs and sports keeping you away from home. Even if you were to be in bed by 7:30, studies have shown, adolescents, or preteens don’t start releasing melatonin until 11:00pm and they don’t start pumping it again until later in the morning which is why it could be so hard to wake up in the morning.
Another main factor that would play into school starting later is that students might be more academically successful. Meaning, students would be so much more well rested that they could face the day with an enthusiastic and energised attitude because let’s be honest, an alarm screeching in your ear probably isn’t the best way to wake up and probably instantly kills your mood. They would also be more focused and attentive in the classroom setting, giving more time for homework and to be more organised. Many studies and experiments have shown that starting school later has a more positive impact on students.
For example, a school in England started school everyday at 10am, increasing the concentration levels of the pupils and resulted uprise of 40% in academic levels. This is why I believe school should start later. Thank you for listening.
Liked the topic I total agree with you.
